This app will pay you to get fit
A free app launched today will offer rewards for you for the steps you take, giving you vouchers, classes and products for getting fit. The company plans on giving actual cash rewards in the near future.
Free app Sweatcpom measures your movements and location, and rewards you with "sweatcoins" for doing exercise (or waving your arm around to make it look like you're walking).
The more you move, the more sweatcoins you get, which can then be exchanged for products, classes and coupons - such as Kymira infra-red clothing and Vivobarefoot running shoes.
The app, which is available on iOS, currently offers rewards in the form of products, but the makers plan on rewarding users with cash in the near future.
"This whole business is pegged to making movement valuable,"co-founder Oleg Formenko said.
"Eventually, sweatcoin is going to have a rate of exchange tied to the British pound."
Sweatcoin believe that insurers and employers will buy the digital currency as an incentive to keep their employees or customers fit, saving themselves money in the long-term.
Four London businesses have already signed up to use the app to reward their employees for keeping fit.
Staff will be able to trade sweatcoins for extra days off, healthy meals or a free massage as a reward for upping their fitness.
You can get the app now on iOS, and there will be an android version will be available in the next few months.
Alternative "paid to get fit" app - Bounts
Alternatively, if you have Fitbit or other activity tracker, you can connect it to the Bounts app. It's also free (there is a paying option though, if you wanted extra perks) and available on Android and Apple.
The same idea as sweatcoin, it turns your tracked activities into points, which then you convert into vouchers, which they send to your door.
Realistically, it's going to take you a while to build up points (you're not getting £50 to your door in a couple of weeks) but it is money for nothing. If you sign up with the code the code lottyburns1173, you'll get 100 points to start with.
If you run both apps, you can get twice the reward for your exercise. You'll also be surprised just how far you're willing to walk, when you know you're being paid for it.
