Surprise: Mum and dad haven’t seen 300-pound son in a year, while he’s lost 130 pounds
In 2012 Lucas Irwin weighed 136kg and was addicted to junk foods and sugary sweets. By Christmas next year he had lost 59kg, shocking his parents when he arrived at their house for the first time in one year.
Lucas, would only see his parents twice a year, during summer and Christmas. He made an excuse so he wouldn’t see his parents over the summertime to avoid spoiling the surprise. He kept a food log of what he ate everyday and after losing 45kg, Lucas began walking five miles to work everyday.
Over the moon
He shed the majority of fat just by changing his eating habits, eliminating all of the junk foods and instead choosing: tuna salad, chicken, salsa, vegetables, beans and rice among other healthy foods. Lucas said: “I lost 95 percent of the weight just through changing my diet. I only ate 1,350 calories a day. I didn’t exercise at all until maybe seven or eight months in. Social media was amazing for my weight loss journey. Especially the Reddit ‘LoseIt’ community. You can post your progress and they would help with diet tips and that sort of thing. It’s something that I have struggled with all my life.”
Speaking to ABC’s Today Show, Irwin said: “I only go home once or twice a year, usually once in the summer, once for Christmas. And I made up an excuse not to go home over the summer just so they wouldn’t see me. When I saw my parents for the first time, I was really nervous. I was shaking and …it was very surreal.”
Finally, after 365 days of dedication, he arrived at his parents’ home. He wasn’t sure if they’d even recognise him. Jeff, Lucas’s dad, said he was “over the moon” about his son’s transformation, while his step mum Susan said she couldn’t be prouder. Here’s the heartwarming moment:
