Man rants at cinema after spending £5.50 on nachos
A man has gone on a rant at the cinema chain Vue after he was made to spend £5.50 on these "nachos" on a trip to the cinema.
Dean McQuade took to Facebook to rant at Vue for the price of their tickets, snacks and disappointing nachos after one trip to his cinema ended up costing £70.
He drew special attention to the disappointing (Jalapeño-less) nachos, which cost him an astonishingly extortionate £5.50. After he posted the message on Facebook to Vue, everyone else took the opportunity to complain about high prices and "sticky, dirty" cinemas around the UK, and how terrible the toilets are.
"I'm no penny pincher & after been at work all week, when it gets to the weekend I want to do something with my kids but come on vue£5,50 for these, £5,50!!! There must be more than £5 profit in that!" Dean posted.
£70 for one damn cinema trip
After taking his kids to the cinema on the weekend, Dean posted to Vue's cinema page, telling them
"I'm no penny pincher & after been at work all week, when it gets to the weekend I want to do something with my kids but come on vue£5,50 for these, £5,50!!! There must be more than £5 profit in that!"
"Put that with the ticket prices a drink & some sweets for them your looking at £70. That means a man of 25 on national minimum wage has to graft 10hrs to take 2 kids to the cinema for 1.5hrs on his day off. Madness."
Vue responded by telling Dean about the plight of cinema distribution.
"Hi there. It is a generally well-reported fact that the majority of the money taken at the box office goes to the film maker/distributor; therefore in order to make cinemas a viable business all cinemas charge premium prices for the food and drinks sold." They said.
"The alternative is to charge a higher price for tickets which would restrict more people from enjoying the cinema. However, this said we do aim to provide value and you will find a variety of combos and special offers that do save you money."
"Please note that you are able to bring your own food and drink into the cinema rather than purchasing from our confectionary stands. This is with the exception of hot food or alcohol. I am sorry for any distress caused and I hope this answers your query. - Jade"
Unfortunately for Vue, this didn't really quiet down customer dissatisfaction. Other customers joined, to tell them what they thought of the prices.
And others told them about the state of their toilets.
Other users also complained to Vue about the prices of the tickets and food. Then they started complaining about the quality of carpet and toilet they were getting for their money.
"The carpets and tables in the Vue Livingston are sticky, dirty and generally a dump. Wont be back! Honestly the carpet was sticking to your feet, and the tables at the premium seats were dirty, sticky and disheveled, does Vue Cinemas not have Regional managers who check these places. It was disgusting." One user, Stephen Boyle, said.
Other cinema-goers thought the sticky carpets took second fiddle to the state of the toilets at the chain.
"Overwhelming smell of urine." Toilet review, Hamilton Vue, from toilet critic Pamela Murphy.
Stingy nacho vendors
But mostly people were just outraged that a cinema could charge so much for a few terrible looking nachos and some watery-looking cheese sauce.
"It wouldn’t be so bad if the portion size was 4 times the size shown in the photo then that might make the pill a little easier to swallow." Lucy Armstrong said.
"Those tortillas are less than 50p for a large bag in most supermarkets!! I’m sure people understand where the money from food sales goes but come on that’s just stingey!!!"
Dean is believed to be planning a trip to Disneyland to complain about the price of their Pepsi.
