Easy Ways To Get Started On Making Extra Money Now
We all want a bit of extra money coming in, whether that be just to help with paying the bills or to go towards bigger savings goals like saving up for a house deposit.
But where to start? When you type it into Google, a lot of things will come up - and it’s hard to know which ones will be the best for you.
- we’ve tried and tested the methods below and given you a roundup of each one.
Best of all?
You can do these around your studies and even better, can do them with your friends as well.
I don’t know about you, but I always thought that mystery shopping meant that you would have to wear a disguise (it conjures up images of a mac with the collar up and sunglasses, or is that just me?!), ask a million questions and try and get them to react.
Truth is, it’s not like that at all. Companies want to see how their staff are performing, and a lot of the time they need their staff to ask customers specific questions and have the store laid out in a particular way, which is what you will be checking.
There are lots of different jobs that you can do with mystery shopping, but our favourite is definitely the food ones.
You get a small fee and free food - bargain!
When money is a bit tight, it is nice to be treated to some nice food, and there are some jobs available where you have to go as a pair, so you can go out for food with your friend as well.
For more ways of scoring free food, check out our article 'how to get free food' here
Our second favourite would probably be clothes shops, because it’s always nice to get some free clothes.

Being completely honest here, answering surveys is never going to make you rich. What it will do, however, is get some extra cash in your account, and as they are so quick to do, you can do it when you’re in the bath, in a queue, eating your lunch etc.
It’s essentially market research that companies are doing, and need you to answer some questions so that they can get feedback from your demographic.
You don’t need to complete any surveys that you don’t want to, but rest assured that we only recommend decent survey sites.
The best survey sites around at the moment are:

This is probably one of the easiest ways of making extra money out there, as you have to do hardly anything!
You can get cashback on items that you are going to be buying online, just by clicking through from the cashback website.
How does it work?
- Go to the store you are shopping with via the cashback site
- For example, if you need to get some car insurance and you know who you are going with, then you can go on to the cashback website and type it in.
- You then click the link of your chosen store, and it will take you through to the website (of the car insurance provider, for example), and will track this.
- All that you need to do then is complete the transaction as you would normally.
- Wait for the cashback to show on your cashback account
- Withdraw to a chosen bank account, Paypal or as gift vouchers

There are a ton of different money making apps that are out there right now, and you can pick and choose which ones you want to do.
This is perfect for when you are wandering around the shops or have a bit of free time to spare.
This is a survey app, where you answer questions and are rewarded with hard cold cash.
The surveys are done via the app and are quick to answer, with the general payout (from my personal experience) being around £1.
If you are prone to going to the shops, this is the perfect money making app to do. We love this app because it is really easy to use.
With this app, you will need to take photos of any adverts for jobs that you see in shop windows. You know when you see a sign that says “Barmaid wanted” or something similar? That is what you need to take a photo of.
As well as the photo of the advert, you will need to take a photo of the store sign as well - so 2 photos in total. And that’s it!
Be My Eye
Another app that is great to do when you are out and about, this one involves taking part in “missions” in exchange for money.
It’s a mystery shopping app where you will be asked to photograph some items and report their prices. You may have to go into a supermarket and look for specific items as per the mission.
Another really easy app to use, although this one takes a bit of time to build up, but I thought I would include it anyway as I still use it.
This is kind of like a mini survey app where you will be asked questions which they call “steers”.
The steers are really, really short - they are generally one click answers, which is why I still use this app - it takes no time at all. You will need to get to 10,000 points in order to cash out £5.
I have done cat sitting, and that’s even with being highly allergic to cats!
There are lots of people who are at work all day and just want someone to pop in to check on their cat, or even if they have gone away on holiday they may just want you to pop in once or twice a day and feed their cat.
This can be really flexible, but obviously make sure that you do what the owners ask of you.
Re-selling is exactly as it sounds - you are re-selling items on for a profit. For example, if you find cheap items at the charity shop or at a car boot sale, you may be able to sell it on for a higher price on a site like eBay.
There are lots of videos out there on Youtube or re-sellers on Instagram that you can follow for advice on things that sell well.
Examples could be:
clothing, shoes, toys, electronics etc. Pretty much anything that will sell on eBay, you could flip.
Take a look at our article 'How to be amazing at selling on eBay'
You could also try selling on Amazon too, but a lot of the categories are locked until you are more experienced on there.
Etsy is the best place to find hand-made or vintage items, as well as unique factory made items.
It is the site for entrepreneurs to showcase their talent and get paid for their items.
Have you got skills that could pay the bills? There are all kinds of things that you can sell on Etsy, and you don’t have to be the next Picasso to be successful on there.
Ideas could be:
- Digital prints e.g. wall prints, quotes etc
- Digital art that people can either print off or you deliver
- Pet supplies
- Wedding invitations
As you can see, there are loads of different options for things that you could sell on Etsy. Have a browse through the categories and see if there are any that you could try out.
How have you made extra money? Could you try any of these?
