pear hangover cure

Science has once again walked in the room like a boss and saved the day. Not content with stopping you from dying of the plague, or working out how to put mittens on kittens, science has gone and worked out a way to cure your hangover.

Hangover cure

Australian scientists at CSIRO have found that eating pears or drinking pear juice before you drink can massively reduce your hangover symptoms the next day. The researchers suggested that the pear juice helped metabolise the alcohol in the blood, and was especially good at reducing symptoms such as memory loss and poor concentration. This means that the drunk nights you spend drinking cheap perry (most likely nights you'll want to forget) are precisely the drunken nights you're most likely to remember.

Participants in the study also experienced less sensitivity to light and sound the morning after.

Manny Noakes, research director at CSIRO, says: ‘Reductions were seen in blood acetaldehyde levels, the toxic metabolic thought to be responsible for the hangover symptoms, with pear juice consumption.

‘Overall hangover severity, as measured by a 14 item hangover symptom scale, was significantly reduced in the pear group compared to those having a placebo drink, with the most pronounced effect seen on the specific symptom of ‘trouble concentrating’.

Whilst the pears did help cure the main hangover symptoms (feeling like you might die, room spinning etc) the main effect was boosting concentration. Meaning you'll be able to concentrate on feeling like you might die, or on quantifying precisely how much you think the room is spinning.

Which pear is best?

So far the researchers have only tested the Asian and Korean varieties of pear, as they have commonly been used as a hangover cure for decades in the far east, but they plan to test whether the same results will occur with the otherwise useless and barely worth mentioning western pear.

The optimum amount of pear is 220ml of pear juice - before alcohol consumption.

‘I should make the point that the effect was demonstrated if you take pear juice before alcohol consumption. Once you have a hangover, there is no evidence that it will do you any good.'

The researchers have not confirmed whether drinking only Perry will make you immune to a hangover.
