16-25 Railcard Student Deals

16-25 Railcard Discount Tips and Tricks

If there’s only one ‘money saving’ thing you do as a student, make sure you pick up a National Rail 16-25 railcard - trust us, it’ll be a sad day when you’re too old for it.

Frankly, train travel is just unaffordable for a lot of people without one. If you spend £90 on train fares in a year (which is what - two journeys?), you’ll make your money back on the card, no problem.

What is the 16-25 railcard?

Very basically, the 16-25 railcard cuts a third off the price of train travel and a one year card usually costs £30. You can get a discount on Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance fares on all National Rail train operators in the UK. You can even get a third off first class fares if you’re feeling fancy.

There is also the option to get a three year railcard, which costs you £70 - so will save you an extra £20 (rather than buying 3x one year cards).

However, you can’t use your railcard for journeys within the London and Southeast area in the morning rush hour Monday-Friday.

Remember to keep your card with you when you travel. You’ll need to show it, along with your ticket when the conductor comes around. If you don’t get it out - they could charge you the difference and/or make you buy a new, full priced ticket.

If you live/go to uni in London, and have a 16-25 card, you can have your card registered on your Oyster card, which will give you ⅓ off the price of all single off-peak rail fares and also the off-peak price cap - which is amazing! Just take your Oyster card and your 16-25 railcard to an underground, overground or National rail ticket office and ask them to add your discount entitlement to your Oyster card.

Who can get it?

It’s only available to people aged 16-25 (27 year olds, don’t you worry - keep reading), or people over 26 in full-time education, which means you need to do at least 15 hours per week for at least 20 weeks a year. Open University, distance learning and part time courses don’t qualify.

Where can I get it?

There are two standard options. You can purchase one by going to the train station and filling in the form (you’ll need to bring along a passport photo). Or, you can order a card online, and just use any clear headshot, or take a selfie with your webcam/phone camera, upload it and get the card delivered to your home. It depends how quickly you need it.

Alternatively, bank accounts usually give away free 16-25 railcards when you sign up to student bank accounts. They usually seriously start competing over the summer, so wait till then if you want a bank freebie. For example, Santander currently gives new 123 Student Current Account holders who pay in £500 a term, a four-year 16-25 railcard which would cost you £120 at full price.

Are there any deals out there?

If you have an NUS Extra card holder you can get 12% off a 16-25 railcard online, when you use the code NUS11, which will cost you £26.60 instead of the usual £30. However, make sure you keep checking back on this page, as we’ll have the best/current deals on here.

If you (or your parents) collect Tesco points, you can get 50% off annual railcards, including the 16-26 railcard, making it £15 of Tesco vouchers instead of £30 when you boost your points. You’ll be sent a code that can be used at the Railcard checkout.

Is there a loophole?

Well, funny you asked… there is a cheeky loophole. So generally, a lot of people just buy the 16-25 railcard year-on year, because £70 can be quite a bit to fork out.

HOWEVER, if you can buy a three year railcard just before your 24th birthday (leave it about a week before your birthday, so if there are any problems with your application, you’ll still be able to get it), and you’ll have a valid card until you’re 27. *Loophole klaxon!* Even if your card hasn’t expired, it’s still worth getting the three year one anyway.
